Presentation of the SIRENA project in which ECOAQUA participates in the XIX NAC

Dr. Antonio J. González Ramos, member of the Biodiversity and Conservation Group (BIOCON) of the University Institute ECOAQUA of the ULPGC, presented the SIRENA project at the XIX National Aquaculture Congress (NAC) held this week in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Organised by the Aquaculture Research Group (GIA) of the ECOAQUA Institute of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) for the Spanish Aquaculture Society (SEA), this congress brought together more than 200 researchers and scientists specialising in the aquaculture sector.

The SIRENA project (Remote Monitoring System for Harmful Events in Aquaculture) will be developed in a pilot area in the waters of Gran Canaria and proposes the creation of an early warning system for the protection of aquaculture facilities against harmful events of natural or anthropogenic origin.

This innovative warning system is based on the detection of any event using satellite images and the subsequent calculation of its trajectory using models and methodologies that have already been successfully tested in other programmes by the project team.

Currently in the provisional approval phase, its definitive approval is expected in July as part of the call for applications for aid from the Pleamar Programme of the Biodiversity Foundation.

Members of ECOAQUA's BIOCON and OFYGA groups collaborate in this project, as well as researchers from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) of the State Agency, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Coastal Action Group of Gran Canaria.
