ECOAQUA presents its research on the ocean at FIMAR

The BIOCON and EOMAR research groups, with three of their researchers, participate in the fair to disseminate the work carried out by the ECOAQUA University Institute in promoting and boosting the Blue Economy in the Canary Islands.

The International Maritime Fair (FIMAR) returned for its twelfth edition in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, offering a wide range of talks and educational sessions open to the general public, focusing on the oceans, marine biodiversity, the work carried out by different institutions and companies in the marine and coastal environments, and the development of sustainable beaches.

The University Institute for Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems Research (ECOAQUA) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) participated in the event through the intervention of three of its researchers. Inmaculada Herrera Rivero, from the Biodiversity and Conservation (BIOCON) group, opened the talks session on Friday the 16th with 'Who or What is Sheldon J. Plankton,' while on Saturday, José Juan Castro Hernández, director of the Department of Biology at ULPGC, presented a session titled 'Heading to Easter Island or the failure of sustainable development.' Finally, on Saturday, Emilio Soler Onís, from the Eco-physiology of Marine Organisms (EOMAR) group, gave a talk on 'The microscopic ocean: exploring the microalgae of the Canary Islands.'

The International Maritime Fair took place from June 16th to 18th in the Santa Catalina Dock area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, becoming a regional reference for the nautical and maritime sector in the Canary Islands. Organized by the department of “Ciudad del mar” from the city hall of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and by Infecar, Feria de Gran Canaria, with the sponsorship of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the Port Authority of Las Palmas.

In addition to hosting a commercial offering from sector suppliers, FIMAR included a parallel technical program, scientific dissemination, and complementary activities.
