Ricardo Haroun will be the director of ECOAQUA for the next four years

The ULPGC professor belongs to the University for more than 32 years, and his management team includes Dr. May Gómez Cabrera as deputy director, and Dr. Adolfo Jiménez and Dr. Rafael Ginés as secretary and head of service, respectively

 

After the elections to the Board of Directors of the Institute for Research in Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems (ECOAQUA) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), held on September 13th at the university research center, Ricardo Haroun Tabraue, PhD in Biological Sciences and professor of the ULPGC, has been officially proclaimed today, Thursday, September 21st, director of the institution, PhD in Biological Sciences and professor of the ULPGC, has been officially proclaimed today, Thursday, September 21, director of the institution, although he was already acting director since the previous director became Vice-Chancellor of Research and Transfer of the ULPGC.

Professor May Gómez Cabrera will assume the position of deputy director, while professors Adolfo Jiménez Jaén and Dr. Rafael Ginés Ruiz will assume, respectively, the positions of secretary and head of service of the institute's Board of Directors for the next four years.

After more than 30 years at the ULPGC, Ricardo Haroun, who is an expert in systematics, sustainability and conservation of marine biota, has more than 190 scientific publications, most of them focused on biodiversity and sustainable use of marine resources. A lifetime of university teaching and research activity, with more than 75 research projects and 26 research contracts and agreements, which has drived him, among other things, to be a member of the Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and to be part of scientific committees in different national, regional and island organizations linked to biodiversity management.

Haroun wanted to talk to the members of the institution, after the provisional proclamation last Thursday, claiming that "I will try to develop to the best of my knowledge the work program proposed, where I will not only need the support of the members of the management team, but also the collaboration of all the people who make up our institute and, of course, the harmony with the university policy developed by the Rectorate to respond to the social demands of our environment".

In the road map, with which the new management team of the University Institute ECOAQUA has promised for the next four years, it highlights the increase in the number of research projects of the scientific center, multiply the presence of researchers linked to the sustainable management of the marine environment and its resources, improve the procedures and mechanisms of management and control of the resources and attract new researchers both from the ULPGC and from other universities.
