The rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Lluís Serra Majem, closed the Professional Conferences held on the occasion of World Aquaculture Day at the Research Institute for Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems (ECOAQUA), of which the university center is this year the national headquarters by designation of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Aquaculture Society (SEA).

“Gran Canaria is a world capital in sustainable aquaculture and that is due to a university that is at the forefront of the project, with the work done in the research institute ECOAQUA and the Faculty of Marine Sciences. Ultimately, I believe that we are now reaping the fruits of a job well done over many years, and having been designated national headquarters for World Aquaculture Day is a sign of this”, said the rector, who attended the final tasting of aquaculture products that ended the event.
The program of activities for the World Aquaculture day was structured around two keynote lectures. The first was given by Alex Obach, Director of Innovation at Skretting, a global leader in animal feed production, and the second was given by Matt Craze, Senior editor of Undercurrent News.

In the middle of both, a round table discussion was held on the sustainable growth of aquaculture in the islands, moderated by Juan Ramón Rodríguez, Director of project development at BIOASIS Gran Canaria, entity that sponsored the event through the IAT project, developed with FEDER funds through the INCYDE Foundation.
To close the World Aquaculture Day, attendees were able to enjoy a tasting of aquaculture products, courtesy of Roda International and Aquanaria, in which some products of white shrimp and Atlantic sea bass stood out.
